The PSAT test will be administered this year on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2012
Registration & Payment Deadline is August 1st
The Testing Fee is $25 for EE members and $35 for non-members.
A PSAT Overview Class is included.
Homeschoolers are also welcome to take the PSAT as well as AP tests at their local public school!
The Texas Education Agency adopted a ruling in 2007 to require ALL public schools to allow homeschoolers WHO LIVE IN THEIR ATTENDANCE ZONE to take the PSAT and AP tests under the same conditions and costs as students enrolled in that school. Please read below for more information about this ruling.
Some private schools are also open to allowing homeschoolers to test with them, but space may be limited in these schools. Public schools are required to allow homeschoolers. Private schools are not.
I have tried to locate information about registering on several local school disctrict websites, but the Conroe ISD website was the only one I have found so far that gives clear instructions. If you find other info, I will be happy to include it on this page to help other homeschoolers! Send an email to extraed@att.net if you have other information or links to inlcude.
PSAT GENERAL INFORMATION
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is one of the most important tests a student in high school can take. As the word “preliminary” implies, the PSAT closely conforms in the areas of format and content to college admission tests like the SAT or the ACT. Another reason why the PSAT is important is because the National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses it as one of the criteria in awarding scholarships. The PSAT is especially helpful for diagnosing areas of strength and weakness for the future college applicant. The PSAT is highly regarded as a predictor of success on the ACT or SAT. The scoring report of the PSAT shows the percentile scores in several categories, including reading comprehension, mathematics skills, and language arts.
Texas Education Code §29.916 requires the following: HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENT MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING
(b) A school district shall permit a home-schooled student entitled under Section 25.001 to attend public school in the district to participate in an administration of the PSAT/NMSQT or a college advanced placement test offered by the district. A school district shall require a home-schooled student to pay the same fee to participate in a test under this subsection that a student enrolled in the district is required to pay.
(c) A school district shall post on an Internet website maintained by the district the date the PSAT/NMSQT will be administered and the date any college advanced placement tests will be administered. The notice required under this subsection must state that the PSAT/NMSQT or the advanced placement test is available for home-schooled students eligible to attend school in the district and describe the procedures for a home-schooled student to register for the test.
A school district that does not maintain an Internet website must publish the information required by this subsection in a newspaper in the district. If a newspaper is not published in the school district, the district shall provide for the publication of notice in at least one newspaper in the county in which the district's central administrative office is located.
The information required under this subsection must be posted or published at the same time and with the same frequency with which the information is provided to a student who attends a district school.
Homeschool students residing within CISD are eligible to sign up and take the PSAT and Advanced Placement Tests at participating area high schools.
